# Pick up open shifts

> Grab extra shifts your team has opened up for anyone to take.

<Info>**For your team.** Everyone can see and claim open shifts.</Info>

Open shifts are shifts that need someone — either extra shifts your manager
posted, or ones a teammate asked to have covered. If you want more hours, this is
where to find them.

## Claim an open shift

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the Schedule">
    Click **Schedule** in the top tabs, then click the **Open shifts** tab.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Look through what's available">
    Each shift shows its time, position, location, and the reason it's open.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Claim it">
    On a shift you want, click **Claim shift**. It's now yours.
  </Step>
</Steps>

After you claim a shift, Vera takes you to **My shifts**, where it now appears.

## Why some shifts are greyed out

If a shift looks faded and has no **Claim shift** button, there's a reason — for
example:

* **This is your own request** — you're the one who asked to have it covered.
* **You're already scheduled for this shift** — you can't claim a shift you're
  already on.

## A heads-up after you claim

Sometimes Vera shows a short note after you claim a shift — for instance, that it
lands close to another shift or pushes your hours up. It's just so you know; the
shift is still yours. Click **Go to My shifts** to carry on.

## What success looks like

You spot an open shift, claim it, and it shows up under **My shifts** — no need
to message anyone to confirm.
